Causes of lower back pain

One of the most common causes of lower back pain is mechanical in its origin. Caused by lifting or twisting in the wrong way, the small joints of the spine can move to cause irritation and inflammation. This results in tension in surrounding muscles as they try to guard and stabilise the area. This can happen in all regions of the spine, from the low back right up to the neck.

The fundamental approach of treatment is to reestablish the alignments of the mechanical body, both spinal and peripheral joints to allow the free flow of fluids, blood through the veins and arteries, lymph through the lymphatic vessels and micro vessels in the body fascia layers and from the application of Chinese medical acupuncture needling, cupping and moxa to facilitate the free flow of Qi, blood and body fluids through the acupuncture channels of the body.

By encouraging these improvements in the free flow of fluids and Qi, the patients body self healing mechanisms are placed in optimum position to allow self healing and the resolution of symptoms.

Types of muscular treatments

Massage

The therapist may perform different massages to stimulate the muscles.

Counterstrain

The therapist moves the patient between minimum and maximum points of lower back pain before gradually returning them to a more neutral position.

Soft Tissue Mobilisation

The therapist utilizes rhythmic stretching, deep pressure or traction techniques to engage the muscle area around the spine

How long until I notice a difference?

Some patients can have immediate relief, quite often after treatment patients say “oh, I feel better already”!  Whereas others discover it can take a few days, weeks or months. Many factors can affect your recovery, such as how long you’ve had the problem, your age or even the severity. In a lot cases, you will feel a definite change for the better early on in your treatment plan.

Whilst every patient is different, your specialist will be able to advise you on your most likely recovery time. Usually, the longer you’ve had an issue, the longer it will take to get it sorted. You must be committed to your treatment plan, paying close attention to home exercises and any diet programme set by your specialist as this will improve your recovery time.
